Community Languages

AS and A Levels

Curriculum

Completing an AS or A Level in a Community Language enables you to utilise your prior learning of languages, gain formal recognition for your mastery of multiple languages and demonstrate a greater breadth of study than other students. As a student of one or more Community Languages, you will develop a deeper appreciation for the language you speak within the home, studying language and culture through literature, film, history and social interaction with peers who share the same language.

Culturally, you will form and express opinions, but also be able to understand those of others and from where their viewpoints arise. Studying a Community Language provides an immersive language experience that evokes passion, cultural awareness and communication skills, further developing your ability to access the wider world. The course will help to create learners that are resilient, open-minded, empowered to communicate in reading, listening, writing, translation and speaking with self-agency.

Progression

Most students complete a Community Language AS or A Level in addition to their A Levels or Vocational Qualifications. It can contribute UCAS points and most universities will consider this as of equal value to your other subjects. Community languages can support a multitude of different progression routes, from university and further education courses to working abroad. It has also supported applications for Higher Degree Apprenticeships and demonstrates to future employers a passion and commitment to independent study.
