Functional Skills English

Level 1 & 2

Reading and Writing: You will learn to read a range of different text types confidently and fluently, applying your knowledge and understanding of texts to your own writing, write texts of varying complexity, with accuracy, effectiveness, and correct spelling, punctuation and grammar, understand the situations when, and audiences for which, planning, drafting and using formal language are important, and when they are less important.

Speaking and Listening: You will learn to, listen, understand and make relevant contributions to discussions with others in a range of contexts, applying your understanding of language to adapt delivery and content to suit audience and purpose. You will gain confidence through giving a presentation on a topic that fascinates you as well as asking and answering detailed questions. At the right time, and at the right level, you will be entered for a reading and a writing exam, as well as a speaking and listening exam, consisting of a presentation and formal discussion.

Curriculum

As a student of Functional Skills English, you will develop confidence and fluency in, and a positive attitude towards, English through interactive and engaging sessions. You will learn to demonstrate your competence in English by using it in real world situations, building a sound understanding of basic English knowledge and skills. You will gain a qualification for work, study and life, demonstrating the ability at an appropriate level to read, write, speak, listen and communicate in English, and applying these skills effectively to a range of purposes in the workplace and in other real world situations. You will learn to communicate with confidence, effectiveness and with an increasing level of independence.
