Health Guidance for Students
Dear Students, Parents and Carers
Following news reports of a number of meningitis cases in Kent, which have sadly resulted in two deaths, Public Health officials are reminding all parents and students of the importance of meningitis vaccination.
The MenACWY vaccine is routinely offered to all students in Year 9, however around 35% of older students in Bristol in Years 10–13 have not received their MenACWY vaccination. Please can you or your parent/carer check your vaccination record, either by contacting your GP or through the NHS App, to confirm whether you have received this vaccine.
If you have not been vaccinated, you can book an appointment by:
- Emailing sirona.sch-imms@nhs.net
- Calling 0300 1245 515
- Or arranging this through your GP
- We will also put up some posters in the toilets and in the foyer of the eye with a QR code for you to make an appointment
- Visit https://sirona-cic.org.uk/children-services/services/school-age-immunisation/ for further information
Although the recent outbreak has been described as serious, it is localised to another region, and public health officials emphasise that the overall risk remains low for the general population. We do not want to alarm you, but it is important we support you with the necessary information.
Meningitis can spread through close contact such as coughing, sneezing, or sharing drinks and utensils. Students and young adults are more likely to carry the bacteria without knowing.
Common symptoms include:
(Please note: not everyone will get all of these and many people with these symptoms do not have meningitis.)
- High temperature / fever
- Severe headache
- Feeling or being sick
- A rash that doesn’t fade when pressed with a clear glass (may not always appear)
- Stiff neck
- Sensitivity to bright lights
- Extreme tiredness or confusion
- Cold hands and feet
If you have these symptoms and feel unwell quickly, it is best to seek medical advice. You can call 111 for advice, or 999 if you feel very unwell.
What you can do
- Look out for one another. If a friend seems suddenly very unwell, encourage them to speak to a trusted adult or seek medical advice.
- Don’t share water bottles, vapes, cutlery, or anything that goes near the mouth.
- Keep up to date with vaccinations you’re eligible for, as they help protect against certain strains.
If you feel unsure, concerned, or have questions, we are here to support you
Many thanks,
P16 Team
