BTEC Diploma - Level 1

Curriculum

This programme is designed to provide you with some extra time to develop independent learning skills, alongside the opportunity to try out a variety of employment-focused experiences to develop skills in customer service, administration, teamwork, leadership and organisation.

As a student on this course, you will have the opportunity to explore a range of career pathways and to develop a range of employability skills. You will begin by learning about how to effectively organise your time and create a plan for your progression.

You will then cover 3 vocational sectors including Business, Sport and Hospitality. During this time, you will explore how to carry out a range of business administration tasks and use these skills to organise a fundraising event. As a vocational learner, you will explore the skills needed to perform in sport and will use this to assist with leading a sports activity. You will also explore the skills needed to provide excellent customer service while serving food and drink and how to prepare, and cook, a range of nutritious food, to be able to keep yourselves healthy.

Lastly, you will use all of this to be able to carry out a research project in one of these sector areas, developing your independent learning skills in readiness for the next level of study.

Progression

On successful completion of this qualification, you could progress to a range of Level 2 programmes. This could be a programme in college (e.g. Business/Health and Social Care) or an Apprenticeship.

Careers

This is an entry level programme designed to prepare you for a full GCSE programme. It is therefore expected that you will progress to Level 2 (and beyond) prior to exploring employment options.

Some possible jobs that this may support could be Sports coaching, After School Club assistant, Business Administrator, Receptionist, Customer Service Assistant, Waiting staff, Chef’s Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Care Assistant.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for this programme – it is aimed at those with GCSE grades less than Grade 2 who do not meet entry requirements for Level 2 courses.

Assessment

The exam board is Edexcel.

Assessment is achieved through coursework tasks. Most units also have a practical demonstration element.

Opportunities for work related activities

Throughout the course, students will engage with employers and visits to observe skills in action.
