Update from Ms Sheardown

Dear parent/carer,

Term 6 is always a really busy time with mock exams and UCAS launch for students wishing to apply for university. Please find below some of the supported opportunities for our students and a few notices.

Our Expectations – Dress Code

We understand that students are individuals and feel that it is important to allow you to feel entitled to individuality, and to express this through your choices about your appearance.  However, we are also very serious about educating you and preparing you for the world of work, and the formal expectations that this can bring.  For this reason, we have the following expectations.

You are expected to wear clothes appropriate for study.  No overly revealing or extreme styles of fashion are allowed, or any clothing with offensive messages, either through words logos or images. Jewellery and make up is allowed as long as health and safety conditions are met. On occasions we may ask you to dress in a more formal manner, for example at Open Evenings, or if representing the school on official business.  No hats or hoods are to be worn inside school buildings.

If CLF Post 16 feel that you are dressed in a way that doesn’t meet these requirements, we will discuss the issue with you, and agree appropriate changes in order to meet the requirements.

UCAS Launch – applying for university

We are running a student introduction on Thursday 1st July at 3.30pm in the Cabot Eye and JCA. This session will run through TEAMs for students unable to attend and can also be joined by interested parents and carers via the link: UCAS Launch – TEAMs link

Please also find a link to a parent presentation from UWE: Advice for parent and carers

To support this process we have IntoUniversity joining us on Friday 2nd, 9th and 16th July. They will be running personal statement support workshops from the Media Room in the Cabot Eye, which will run 3 times each day; 8:40am-10:20am, 10:40am-12:20pm, 12.50pm-2.30pm. Students can book sessions as a one off or one each week. Friday the 2nd is an INSET day but we would encourage students to book in, especially if their Fridays are usually busy. Students can book sessions from their school log-ins by following this link: https://forms.office.com/r/UmQ6cHjzTp

Assemblies

Assemblies have continued to run on Wednesdays at 2.30pm through TEAMs. This term we have had a series of Careers workshops led by UWE; Life after Covid, Choosing HE course, Personal Statements (Part1) 30/6, Personal Statements (Part 2) 7/7. Attendance to assemblies has dropped significantly and students are missing out on key information and opportunities.

WEX – work experience

19th-23rd July has been assigned as Work Experience Week for Year 12s, but many opportunities will arise at different times. We would encourage all students to explore Speakers for Schools – Experience, where they will find a wide range of Virtual Taster/Experience Days and Virtual Work experience Weeks across different subject and career pathways. Students register via https://www.s4snextgen.org/students/Take-Part and identify themselves as John Cabot Academy.

Thank you for your support.

Kind Regards

Lyndsey Sheardown
Associate Assistant Principal – Culture and Ethos
